Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars
The term “silver dollar” can describe several different U.S. coins, but two of the most familiar are the Morgan Silver Dollar and Peace Silver Dollar.
Morgan Dollars were minted from 1878 through 1904 and again in 1921, while the original Peace Dollar series was produced from 1921 through 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935. Both types contain 90% silver and are popular with collectors, investors, and people who inherit older coin collections.
At Spartan Gold & Coin, we don't treat Morgan and Peace Dollars the same way we would ordinary 90% constitutional or “junk” silver. These coins frequently have value beyond their silver content, even when they aren't particularly rare.
When evaluating an old silver dollar, we pay particular attention to three things: date, mint mark, and condition.
How Much Silver Is in a Morgan or Peace Dollar?
Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars are made from 90% silver and 10% copper. Each coin originally weighed 26.73 grams and contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounce of silver.
That means an old U.S. silver dollar does not contain a full ounce of silver.
Its precious-metal value therefore depends on the current price of silver, but Morgan and Peace Dollars often trade for more than their underlying silver value because of collector and market demand.
